Irinjalakuda
Irinjalakuda
is a town in Thrissur(Trichur) district in Kerala, India.
In many ways it represents the small towns that dot the whole of Kerala.
This town is famous for Koodalmanikyam Temple that has Bharatha as the
main deity (the only Bharatha Temple in India).
Irinjalakuda is also known for cultural and social institutions such as
Unnayi Warrier Kalanilayayam and Yajurveda Patashala. Unnayi Warrier, the
renowned writer who made immense contribution to the art of Kathakali (a
classical dance form of Kerala) was born here about three hundred years ago.
Irinjalakuda has two beautiful old churches and a good percentage of
the population is Christian, mainly Roman Catholic.
Transportation
Irinjalakuda is 20 km south of Thrissur and the Irinjalakuda town railway
station is located 7 km away from the town centre at Kalletumkara, en route
to Chalakudy. Chalakudy is 18 km east, and the temple town of Kodungalloor
is 16 km south of Irinjalakuda, Edathirinji is 8 km far from Irinjalakuda
respectively. It is about 7 km from the sea-side on its west.
Nearest railway station is the Irinjalakuda station (about 7 km away
at Kallettumkara), almost all trains stops here. Nearest airport is
Nedumbassery, Cochin International Airport which is 40 Kms away.
